About 1Percenter

“Many years ago, the AMA stated that 99% of motorcyclists are law abiding people and only 1% are causing trouble. Those riders who felt they were in that 1% assumed the name One Percenters and started wearing patches denoting themselves as 1Percenters.” From About.com

What does that have to do with this website? What connection can you possibly make between motorcycle outlaws and bloggers?

For starters, they both take a hobby and make it a lifestyle.

They both also share a deep connection with their tool of choice, whether laptop or chopper.

But the similarity that this website is named after is that both have an influence far greater than their size. What the AMA is complaining about above is that 1% of motorcyclists determine how 100% of motorcyclists are perceived. The 1Percenter motorcycle outlaws have an influence disproportionate to their size.

1% of motorcycle outlaws determine what it means to ride a motorcycle. With blogs, 1% of internet users are determining the future of the web.

About this Website

The idea for this website was to display Flickr and Del.icio.us content along-side CMS-managed local content. I chose WordPress as a CMS because it is open source and it has a very well thought-out customization system.

In addition to WordPress, the following people and tools helped and influenced this website:

magpie_icon2.jpg

MagpieRSS is a fantastic RSS feed parser that I use to parse Del.icio.us and Flickr content. I wrote a little WordPress plugin that takes an RSS feed as input and then outputs its contents in HTML that is identical to what WordPress uses for blog posts. This makes Del.icio.us and Flickr content blend in with the rest of the website. If you use MagpieRSS, make sure you turn on caching.

icon_photon.jpg The photo galleries on this website are really WordPress blog posts, each with a single image as the contents. The “galleries” are WordPress categories. This technique was inspired by Douglous Bowman’s “Movable Type Photo Gallery Templates.” To maintain this kind of gallery setup, it is almost essential that you use a batch upload utility that automatically uploads the photos and makes blog posts for them. I use the excellent open source Photon Plugin for iPhoto by Jonathan Younger for this purpose.

Finally, Merlin Mann’s 43Folders was the first website I saw that took offsite content created by it’s owner on various websites (such as on Amazon, Del.icio.us, and Flickr), and displayed it alongside local content. The goal of 1Percenter was to achieve a similiar tight integration with offsite content.

My business partner, Ian McIntosh, provides constant inspiration and assists me in maintaining 1Percenter.

The HTML for the website is based on the Michael Heilemann’s default Kubrick theme for WordPress.

The HTML used for footnotes in blog posts is based on the system John Gruber wrote about on Daringfireball.net.
